German has become an important part of our lives. We have individually traveled to Germany, and other foreign countries in the hope of becoming more internationally aware. Below are some of our personal reasons for pursuing a German major.
The first time I stepped foot on German soil to visit my relatives I
was five years old, and I was in awe of everything I saw and
everyone I met. I have learned so many things about myself and the world
I live in by traveling and experiencing different cultures and different
ways of life. I think I am pursuing a German/ International Studies major
because by traveling I have achieved things I never thought possible, and
formed friendships with people from virtually all over. Germany is simply
an amazing place. After spending time with the people, enjoying the scenery,
and absorbing the atmosphere I have gained an appreciation for the German
people, and the differences between cultures. I will be studying in Germany
this Spring semester, and I look forward to many other wonderful trips,
and great memories of a place I simply adore! - Christine Walter, age 21
I am a German/Spanish
major. No, that doesn't necessarily mean that I want to be a teacher. Basically,
I decided to be a German/Spanish major because I figured that no matter
what I finally decide to do with my life, the fact that I can speak three
languages would be beneficial. Of course, I plan to learn a few more. Being
able to speak other languages is invigorating, because it opens the world
up to you. You are able to converse with so many more people and learn
so many other things. -Jennifer Ferrance, age 22
I am currently a senior here at Virginia Wesleyan College majoring in
German and business. This year, I am also President of Delta Phi Alpha,
the German Honor Society. I find it exciting to aid in the inception of
many new ideas to enhance international
awareness on campus. For example, the German Business class was able to
have a very successful " St. Nicholas Day, " as well as a wonderful
Advent Calendar Fund raiser, and a wonderful turnout for this year's "
Oktoberfest. " -Samantha Ehmer, age 22
