The Hampton Roads Consortium for the Season for NonViolence

The Hampton Roads Consortium for A Season for NonViolence (HRC-SNV) was formed in fall 2002 to combine and coordinate previous efforts by various groups celebrating A Season For NonViolence  (SNV).

A Season for Nonviolence was inaugurated in 1998 to honor the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Since 1998 there has been substantial activity in 115 cities and 40 states, and 10 countries.  The Season for Nonviolence honors Gandhi's and King's vision of a nonviolent world.  This worldwide grassroots movement intends to demonstrate that every person can move the world in the direction of peace through daily choice and action based on compassion, respect and understanding. Fifty percent of our United States governors, including Governor Mark Warner, and many mayors, including the mayors of Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, have issued official proclamations for the 64 day period.

The hope of HRC-SNV is to educate the Hampton Roads community in the principles of nonviolent living and increase participation in A Season for NonViolence locally.

Through a local action campaign, HRC-SNV honors those who use nonviolence to build a community that honors the dignity and worth of every human being.

We, the members of HRC-SNV, wish to demonstrate that every person can move the world in the direction of peace through their daily nonviolent choice and action.

PURPOSE STATEMENT - Violence is found in every segment of our society. It is in our workplace, in the homes of people we know, in our schools and on our streets. It affects all of us, our children, our families, our community. A Season for Nonviolence gives us an opportunity to incorporate nonviolence into our thinking, our attitudes and our moment by moment choices.

The purpose of the Hampton Roads Consortium for A Season for Nonviolence is to bring diverse individuals and groups together to focus attention on how we can make ourselves, our families, our communities and our world less violent through our daily personal choices and actions.

HRC-SNV represents a uniting of diverse groups expressly and only for the promotion of the Season for NonViolence. As a consortium, it does not necessarily support or not support any particular agenda of its member groups. HRC-SNV is not a political group and does not endorse any particular political views.
