VWC community shaken

By Jaci Downey

On the morning of Sept. 10, 2006, a Virginia Wesleyan student returned to a residence hall, after having been beaten severely. The student's hall mates were awakened by the return of the student, who was bleeding from the face and head. After attempting to assist the student, it became apparent that the student was in serious condition and in need of medical attention.

The Virginia Beach police were called. When police and residence life staff arrived, the student was incapacitated and unable to recount the details of the incident.

An ambulance arrived and took the student to Norfolk General Hospital. The student was treated for a collapsed lung, broken nose and contusion. The student was admitted to the hospital. The student was later released into parental care.

Campus security was informed of the situation and searched to locate the site where the incident occurred. A police investigation ensued.

The director of residence life directed questions concerning the incident to David Buckingham, dean of students.

Buckingham will determine the appropriate response of the college in regards to the incident.

"The college has addressed the incident and met through the weekend to handle this isolated situation," said Buckingham.

Buckingham assured The Marlin Chronicle that the administration was handling the situation according to the school's policy in the student handbook. Citing the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, Buckingham refused to confirm any information.
