Field Hockey: Expectations high for the season

By Mike Canino

The women’s field hockey team came into this season with high expectations, trying to mirror the success of last year. The team finished the season with a record of 18-2, which marked its most successful season at Virginia Wesleyan.

“We have some big shoes to fill after losing people like Jackie (Griffin),” said sophomore Megan May. “But our team is ready to do whatever it takes to be successful.”

The Marlins season opener came against Eastern University. The Marlins were shutout, losing 3-0. However, three days later the Marlins came to play, beating Salem College on their home turf. The final tally was 7-1. Goals were scored by sophomore Michelle Krueger, first-years Ashley Traylor and Emily Weiss, who all had two goals each. Impressive goalkeeping also helped the Marlins keep their lead throughout the game, as freshman goalies Megan Koster and Andrea Aiken combined to make 17 outstanding saves.

“We definitely came to play together,” said Krueger. “I think the transition period for the freshman coming in from high school was difficult for them at first, but I know they will be a huge part of our success this season.”

After stomping Salem, the Marlins headed to Catawba College. The confidence must have carried over from Salem, as the Marlin’s beat the Division II team 5-1. Outstanding defense was played throughout the game, and they were offensively impressive as well. The team was led by junior Cara Byrd, who racked up two goals, and by sophomore Holley Marchwicki, who added one goal and two assists.

Following the Virginia College Division Coach of the Year, Kim Mertes, the young team is looking to take it to next level this season after a disappointing loss in the first round of last post-season. The home opener for the Marlins is scheduled for Sept. 18, when they take on Sweet Briar College at noon.
