Women's lacrosse

After being picked to finish last place in a pre-season ODAC poll, the VWC womens lacrosse team experienced a year of firsts. The Lady Marlins won their first game of the season at home. They beat Hollins College, 14-9, on March 6.
Head coach Michelle Burt hopes to see some of her players receive first and second team All-ODAC honors. The leading scorer for the Lady Marlins was junior Roxanne Coderre, with 38 goals and 2 assists for a total of 40 points. Close behind her was junior Jenn Campioli, with 26 goals and 5 assists for 31 points; third was sophomore Charity Gent, who added 14 goals and 5 assists for 19 points.
With only a few girls having played on last years club team, a new interest caught fire and brought in several new faces who were previously unfamiliar to the sport. Most of the players were already athletes, the majority playing field hockey or soccer in the fall.
Coach Burt said of the season, It was a learning experience for the players and myself.
It was a frustrating season, having girls continually getting sick, and receiving injuries, leaving Burt just eleven players, which is the required number to field a team.
Junior Lindsay Jackson, and Gent agreed that they [the team] did really well for being a first year team, winning two games in their conference.
We told each other over and over again, that we had nothing to lose, but everything to gain, said Gent.
The Lady Marlins ended their season in 7th place, out of the nine teams that are in the ODAC. Their overall record was 3-11.
In terms of the future, eventually well be a good team, said Jackson. Coach Burt has plenty of time to recruit ... (the future) has a lot to hold for us.
