Ladies' Night draws empty gym and "buff guys"
by Jessi Hagen

Women on this campus whined and complained that they needed equal time at the gym. But now that their concerns have been addressed (Monday and Wednesday nights have been reserved for ladies from 7-9 p.m.), only three people usually show up. One of these three people is a work study student who is required to be there.

At first, the excuse was that there wasn’t enough advertising to spread the word. That excuse got old after the third night. Nope, lack of publicity is not the problem.

I was at the first meeting to hear the excuses for having a Ladies’ Night. There were plenty of silly reasons, but the one I remember the most was something about “not wanting to be intimidated by all those buff guys.” Have we gotten nowhere? Those “buff guys” still drop by. They come in around 8 p.m. after they’re sure the women won’t be coming. They might as well come in at 6 p.m.

As for the complainers, the idea of not having the guys around is just a front. They just want something to complain about. If they didn’t want the guys to see them sweat, they would have made it a point by now to come to the gym during Ladies’ Night. But hardly any women show up.

This is a perfect example of why the Women’s Liberation Movement has fizzled out. It’s why the women’s festivals on campus are total sleepers. Women complain, gripe, write letters and scream for rights and “our fair share of the pie.” Then when these women get it, they don’t really want it. They just wanted to see if they could get it in the first place.

As for me, I think this whole Ladies’ Night idea is ridiculous. When I show up, there are fewer people there than ever before. Go figure. If the guys were there, I would at least be able to play ball. And as far as being “intimidated,” there is really nothing more intimidating to me than an empty gym on Ladies’ Night.

To all the women on campus who complained, I just want to say—”WHERE ARE YOU, YOU TRAITORS?” And I would like to tell Mark Cassarino that there are better things he could be doing with his time and talents. The women don’t really want a Ladies’ Night at the gym.
