Two unknown suspects entered the VWC campus on March 29 and vandalized a student's vehicle in Batten parking lot, breaking a rear window and stealing a stereo speaker. Under the false pretense of going for an appointment with someone on campus, they passed through security.
"It appears it may have been professional vandals because of the time proximity," said Leo Therrien, director of security.
The offense occurred between the hours of 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. A student witnessed the vandalism and reported it to security.
Security is taking the necessary precautions to help prevent this type of crime from happening again.
"We're asking department heads to give us a list of who's coming that day," said Lt. Emanuel White. "We're going to do everything we possibly can to keep this from going on."
Officers will be vigilantly checking IDs at the DeFord gatehouse. If a guest cannot give the name or department they have an appointment with, security will not let them on campus.
"At least we will have an idea of who is on campus," said White. "If they don't know the name, they're not getting on this campus."
Students are also encouraged to assist security in the necessary precautions.
"Most people are compliant with our requests. Decisions, however unpopular, serve a purpose," said Therrien. "We're doing everything we can to protect the assets of the school and the students."
