Behind the Marlins athletic program is a woman who keeps the peace for all 19 coaches during each season. Shelley Hunter, a Virginia Wesleyan graduate, has been in charge of keeping each coach in the loop for the past four years.
Before taking on the job as Athletic Intercollegiate Coordinator, she worked for the City of Chesapeake as a sports event coordinator. It was not until her sisters, who used to work for Virginia Wesleyan as well, referred her for this position.
Her job consists of forming game schedules for each team, being in charge of master contracts with other college teams, and keeping the athletic department updated on cancellations or rescheduled games.
The most challenging part about my job is dealing with 19 sports and coaches at the same time, and trying to keep everyone on the same page, Hunter said.
Though she does admit her job can be rather hectic at times, there are many other aspects she enjoys as well.
I love being able to meet all the new athletes, and it s also a very open atmosphere, Hunter said. I am not crammed behind a cubicle all day.
Though Hunter did not participate in sports during college, she was committed to her cheerleading team in high school. She has an understanding of the commitment it takes to be on an athletic team, which is why she is dedicated to her job.
Hunter s co-workers also admire her determined work ethic and believe that s one of the reasons the athletic program is a success.
Shelley is a great person to work with because she has so many connections throughout campus, Head Women s Lacrosse Coach Fran Amasia said. She is very bright, and if you are having some sort of difficulty, she is willing to assist you or find someone who can.
Hunter s dedication as Athletics coordinator for Virginia Wesleyan is the foundation behind each team. Without her appreciation for each sport and her co-workers, teams would be unable to maintain their season.
