Smiles, laughter, cheering, running, painting, singing, dancing and friends. All of these and more were going on while Greek organizations stepped onto the Batten lawn and into the Grille to show what they’re made of.
This year’s Greek Week was held from March 31 to April 5. The week of speakers, relays, creations and excitement is about promoting unity among the seven Greek organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha
Sigma Alpha, Kappa Alpha, Phi Kappa Tau, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Nu, and Sigma Sigma Sigma.
Each day students from these organizations wore their Greek letters promoting their fraternity or sorority.
“I really like wearing letters, because its great to see all my fellow greeks representing their organizations,” Michael Starsman from Sigma Nu said.
There were two mandatory talks: Marea Hyman and Kate Loring’s “Domestic Violence and Healthy (Un) Relationships”, and Bruce Boguski’s “Academic Success”.
Loring spoke of her daughter, Claire, and how she was in a healthy relationship with her long time boyfriend. After she realized ther elationship was unhealthy, she tried to get out - and eventually her unstable ex-boyfriend held her hostage, and then killed Claire and himself. After Loring’s presentation, Hyman had an open discussion about ways to know people are in unhealthy relationships and how to improve or fix them. During the “Academic Success” presentation Boguski gave students insight on how to do better on tests by breathing and stretching right.
“I enjoyed the speakers because they talked about important, relevant things,” said Allison Perry of AKA.
The excitement began on Friday with the eighth annual Belly Flop contest and a show performed by BREAK, a five man, hip-hop dance group. BREAK also gave lessons after their performance.
“The belly flop contest was enjoyable to watch everyone compete and keep a Wesleyan tradition going,” said Chappin Eze of KA.
Saturday, the Greek organizations came together on the Batten lawn to paint Adirondack chairs. Each group had a chair to paint about their sorority or fraternity.
“My favorite part of the week was painting the chairs because it’s something that the Greeks can leave on campus and in way, give back to the campus,” said Oliva Casero from ASA .
Along with painting, there was a three-legged race. The teams for the race were separated into Homecoming partners. Alphas (ASA/AKA/KA) defeated the other teams by a close call, but Phi Sigma and
Phi Kappa Tau came back to won the relay of passing an orange under each person’s chin.
The last event of the day was held in the Grille. There was a green screen set up with a lot of costumes and music where everyone could dress up and make a music video of their personal picks.
“Watching everyone get up and sing a song to make a video was hysterical,” said Casero. “It was a great way to end the day,”
