12 students elected for next year's senate

The votes are in and the ballots are counted. Twelve new Student Government Association senators for the 1998-1999 academic year have been elected.

And the winners are ...

Seniors: Olivier Mussat, CiCi Jones, Jim Reese and Sandra Spurlock;

Juniors: Eric Insley, Kristin Eaton, Andrea Talbott, and Chryse Ciresi;

Sophomores: Josh Snow, Cara Swan, Cindy Dixon and Seth Brady.

“I’d like to see more student involvement and, more importantly, hear more student voices — problems and solutions,” said Eaton. Most of the newly elected senators want to improve VWC by acting as the voice for the student body.

“I would like to make VWC an atmosphere that people want. If an atmosphere is presented that is fun and entertaining more people are likely to get involved,” said Dixon.

These 12 students decided to run for senator for a variety of reasons. “I felt I could bring something to the campus community that no one else could,” said Mussat.

Reese said, “I feel that I can represent the ethical or moral aspect of the senior class and try to keep the school on the right track for success as well as academic respect.”

Besides their individual interests, what sets each senator apart from the other? “Definitely my sense of humor,” said Swan. “My freckles,” said Eaton. Insley says he’s set apart because he is “going bald.”

Swan is a returning senator. “After experiencing two semesters of VWC as a freshman senator, I’ve seen how things work,” she said. “ It is more political than it was in high school. I chose to run again because I enjoyed it and want to work even harder to make this campus the best it could be.”

“Stop sitting around and complaining. Get up , do something about it and make a difference,” said Dixon. “Everyone’s opinion counts if they just make their choice to express it.”

This group of senators knows the direction they want to take VWC. Being such a diverse senate with various backgrounds, interests and experiences, next year will surely be successful.
