Staff Editorial: Snow in March?

[Marlin Chronicle file photo]

When Virginia has crazy weather, it truly has some crazy weather. In a two-day span, the Hampton Roads area experienced three of the four seasons: spring, fall and winter. Not bad considering this is March, and it is still "winter."

On March 7, residents were given the chance to experience a taste of spring. The sun was out. The temperatures were mild. The weather gave everyone a slight taste of what is yet to come. However, March 8 was a completely different story. At first, a chilly rain fell in the morning hours. Not too cold, but cool enough to remind everyone of a chilly October evening. Then around noon, Old Man Winter came barging in with heavy snow. Members of Virginia Wesleyan's community were transformed into movable snowmen and snow women. If there was ever a chance to spot the Abominable Snowman, this was it. And throughout the entire snowstorm, the question that ran through everyone's mind was, "Is school going to close early?"

That question was answered quickly. VWC closed at 2:30 p.m.

The sun came out around 3.

The snow melted. All that was left were the treacherous lake-like puddles that were scattered throughout campus.

A special congratulations goes out to the VWC administration for finally giving us a day off to enjoy the sun. Come spring, everyone is going to be wishing that we could have a day off to enjoy a warm afternoon. Most classes are half-filled. Rather than being found in their classroom seats, students can be found frequenting the beach. Aren't those the types of days for which we wish classes were canceled?

Who knows? Maybe Old Man Winter will come early one April morning, classes will be canceled and just 30 minutes later, spring will come waltzing through the door. Then everyone will be able to enjoy a warm afternoon without skipping classes.

It can happen, right?
