"Green Eggs & Ham,” “The Cat in the Hat” and “Horton Hears a Who” are some of the most famous books by Dr. Seuss. We all know of them and probably read them or had them read to us when we were children. But what about kids today? Have they been able to experience one of the best children’s authors of all time? Such was the case on Mar. 2, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Famed author Theodor Seuss Geisel would have been 101 years old. The student-athlete organization Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) decided to take the opportunity to come together as teams and go out to local elementary schools and read to the children.

“It was great to see the kids faces when we were reading to them,” said senior Kelvin Murray.

Each team picked a local elementary school and then split into groups to read to the children. It let the players experience not only remembering what it was like to be younger again but also to give back to the local community.

“It was awesome to see their reactions when these college kids came into their classes,” said senior Lesley Eder. [Photo by Ben Ruehlmann]

Not only were the kids having fun but the players seemed to enjoy going out into the public and relating to kids.

“It reminded me of how easy life was back when we were their age,” said sophomore Kristen Byrnes.

As SAAC moves on in its events, the athletes will be hosting the Youth Education through Sports (YES) program during the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. Having experienced such a great success in this event, SAAC has many other community service events upcoming.

Said Murray, “It is good that we are getting student-athletes involved in the community.”
