This issue's question: What has been your most embarassing moment to date?

Patti Carnrike is a theater major at Virginia Wesleyan who experienced a horrifying date in from high school. When she was 16, she went on a date with a cute guy and dressed to impress. The two teens went to the movies, and headed straight for the snack bar.

At the snack bar, the two decided that a huge tub of popcorn would be a great treat them to share. As they walked back to the theater entrance Carnrike, was so nervous that she kept tripping. Every time she tripped a pile of popcorn came flying out of the tub she was holding. By the time they got to their seats and were ready to see the film, half the popcorn was gone.

"The date was a total disaster," says Carnrike. "I was so embarrassed for the rest of the date. I was trying way to hard too impress this guy."

Since then, Patti has been on many other dates, but none have been so humiliating.

After graduating and majoring in theater, Patti plans on working in Hampton Roads. She will be auditioning for stage parts while working.

[Photo by Colleen Peterson] In four years here at Virginia Wesleyan, there are several embarrassing moments, which come to mind, but nothing compared to the one I experienced recently. It's my last semester of my college career, and the only idea that's going through my mind is, "What am I going to wear today?"

To remedy this problem, the credit card and I ventured to Greenbrier Mall in search of new "gear." I already had a brand-new black-and-white Express shirt, black pea coat, and new Timberland boots. All I needed now was a pair of black-and- white faded jeans to accentuate this ensemble.

Just as my search failed to produce findings, I came across a pair of jeans that I wanted two weeks prior that were still regularly priced at $59. This time around, they were on clearance for $19. In less than two minutes, those pants were off the sales rack and charged to my Visa.

On my way back to VWC, all I could think about was how much more I was going to get noticed by the females. I mean who could resist a sharply dressed fraternity man? The last thing that is going through my mind was whether or not I tried on those new pants. Even though they seemed like a good investment, there was something very off about this purchase.

When the first day of class finally arrived, I was determined to be "dressed to kill." With a fierce outfit and a combination of killer fragrances, senior year was definitely starting off the right way. The weather that day was extremely cold and windy, but it did not bother me. As long as I was looking and smelling good, the weather could be bitterly cold and I still would not care. Walking through the Batten Center (the catwalk, as I call it) was the perfect way to get noticed on Day One.

"Nice outfit, Cory," one girl mentioned.

"Thanks, I worked hard on it," I replied.

This day was actually going pretty well; I was getting several compliments and I was getting noticed by more women than usual. It was not until later that afternoon, that I realized that my suspicions about these stylish pants were about to serve me up a heaping dose of reality.

In search of dinner, I headed off-campus to a Chinese spot to escape the ever-so-tasty (sense my enthusiasm) Grille and Boyd Dining Center. As I walk in to pick up my food, a group of very attractive ladies were giggling and pointing at my crotch, and I had no idea why.

"Nice pants, hon" one woman laughed.

"Thanks, I think," I answered.

On the way back to my car, more people started laughing, and I still had no clue why. When I got into my car, I knew immediately as I dropped my keys between my legs by accident. I had a humongous hole from the crotch of my pants to the bottom of my behind. Imagine my shock and embarrassment when I finally figured out why these women were laughing so heartily. It also did not hit me until I got back to campus that maybe that's why those attractive ladies in the Grille were giving me those compliments.

Now I had to figure out how I was going to get back to my room from my car. As I looked in the backseat to figure out some possibilities, I found my pea coat, which was long enough to cover the big hole in the back. This worked, but on the way back to my room, I could not help but feel just how cold is really was. I know you are wondering why I experienced the temperature more today than any other day; this was because the wind was blowing, and with the big hole in my crotch, I could not help but notice.

I did learn a valuable lesson during this first day of classes: "If it's too good to be true, then it probably is." I say this quote because if you see any item that a week or two prior was extremely high priced and all of a sudden dropped tremendously, then something is not right. And always remember to try on anything before you make any purchases that are labeled as "All Sales Final." Finally, do not make the ultimate mistake like I did. No matter how much anything costs, always keep the receipt. I guess I'm stuck with this "trendy" pair of jeans.

Can we say needle and thread?

[Photo by Jenn Albrecht] Doyle Gillis has a date experience that he, as well as his date, will never forget.

Last March, Gillis and girlfriend Jenn went on their first date together. Gillis decided to take her to the movies to see "Taking Lives," a scary movie staring Angelina Jolie. He says Jenn was pretty scared throughout the entire movie.

When they got back to Gillis' house after the movie, Jenn went to use the bathroom. While she was there, Gillis decided that doing something to scare her would be funny. He knocked on the bathroom door very loudly. Jenn was so frightened by the noise that she fell off of the toilet and broke the seat.

Gillis could not believe what happened. He was worried that she may never talk to him again.

I felt so guilty for scaring her," said Gillis. "Not only was she scared but embarrassed, too."

Everything turned out OK between the two of them. At the end of this month they will be celebrating one year together. Right now Doyle works at Chartway as a CSR loan originator. His major is liberal arts business. Doyle plans on working at Chartway for a while, and then he will go where his life takes him.
