After the student’s long anticipated wait, the surf club at Virginia Wesleyan commenced for the first time, at 7 P.M. on Oct. 4. A club like this seems fitting, considering that Virginia Wesleyan is only 20 minutes away from the beach.

The surf club convened for the first time in the Blocker Auditorium with a turnout of over 20 students.

Max Moody, president of the surf club, said, “The club is open to anybody. It doesn’t matter if you can surf or if you just like to watch surf movies. The more the merrier!”

Moody, from New Hampshire, is a long boarder at heart, but recently converted to a short board. Scott Tetzner, vice president of the club and a native of Delaware, is a short boarder and focuses more on the competitive side of surfing. But one thing is clear: Moody and Tetzner have in share a common love for both surfing and travelling.

In the fall semester surf slub members took frequent trips down to the Outer Banks, where they spent the days surfing and the nights on a camp ground together. They have also taken previous spring break trips to Costa Rica. However this year, the club looks to mix things up a bit with a spring break trip planned to Isabella, Puerto Rico.

“Puerto Rico has been gaining publicity in the surfing world and we’ve never been there,” said Tetzner.

A lot of these trips would not have been possible without the help of the surf clubs sponsors, Sanbridge Surfing Adventure shop and RecX. Sanbridge Surfing Adventure helped by hooking the members up with boards for a discounted price, while RecX offers foam boards for beginning members to learn on, tents for camping and the club also recieves $50 towards plane tickets.

Moody and Tetzner’s crew consists of six students from Wesleyan and two friends of Moody from the

University of New Hampshire and University of North Carolina Wilmington. The crew booked a house minutes away from the surf - now that’s living large! The house has three bedrooms, a full kitchen, one full bathroom and a half bathroom.

The surf club will depart on March 14 and return March 25. All members of the surf club are looking forward to this spring break trip, Puerto Rico is quickly becoming know for it’s monsterous waves and great surf - what more could someone who loves surfing ask for?
