Actors, techies, costumers, lend me your ears! My fellow theater enthusiasts and drama geeks, have you ever found yourself to be acting as a character in one of these scenes?

Scene One: The theater department is putting on a great play, but you’re taking too many night classes to go to rehearsals. Maybe you’d love to stage manage but simply have too much on your plate and can’t fit it into your schedule. However, you still want to participate.

Scene Two: You really want to go out and try to snag a part in said great play, but you’re too shy. Despite this, you’d still like to participate.

Scene Three: Maybe you don’t like the play. It’s just not your kind of thing. So you’ll just sit this one out but you’d still like to participate.

Scene Four: You have a clear schedule and have no fear of the stage, but you didn’t get cast. Regardless, you still want to participate.

Poor players, if these set-ups for what seems like a Greek tragedy is your Act I, then fear not, walking shadow. You no longer have to strut and fret your hour off the stage. There’s still hope for an Act II befitting a Shakespearean comedy, which breaks from yonder window in the form of the VWC drama club.

The meetings depend on what project the club is working on and when the members are available for meetings. They usually meet Thursdays around 4:30 p.m. in the Studio in the Fine Arts building. It’s open to everyone. Actors, techies and people who are just interested in theater are welcome. You don’t have to major or take a class in theater or be in the cast and crew of the current production. You don’t need photos, a resume, a song and two monologues.

“All you need is a love of theater and desire to be part of a theater community,” said Dr. Travis

Malone, coordinator of the VWC theater department.

Kim Fahle, the drama club president, is a sophomore majoring in English and theater. She has been in several VWC productions and partipated in high school theater.

This doesn’t mean people have to be experienced thespians and theater majors to join.

“There’s no major or requirement or anything like that,” Fahle said.

Take, for example, sophomore Paul Wheeler. He’s just starting out in theater, not majoring in it.

He hasn’t participated in any theater at VWC or high school.

“I just recently developed a taste for it,” said Wheeler. “It was just an interest. I decided to pursue it.”

Whether you’re a business major who wants to be a producer with a hit show on Broadway, a closet choreographer who comes up with daring and new dances that go “turn, turn, kick-turn. Turn, turn, kick-turn. One, two, three, kick-turn,” or are ready for your close-up, Mr. DeMille, you’re welcome to join. If you find that the play’s the thing and all your world’s a stage, then you’re in good company.

According to both Fahle and Malone, the drama club will be trying to put together its own productions and Malone added that the club would be involved with the annual Arts Alive! Festival.

“The sky’s the limit in terms of what they want to do,” Malone said.

Fahle said that students will be able to dictate a lot of the activities and they will depend on member interest.

“We’re still definitely looking for more members,” said Fahle. “So, if anyone’s interested, come on down.”

Next time you’re pondering whether your work in the theater is to be or not to be, don’t go mad on a heath. Go mad in the drama club.
