After three years of working in the Admissions Office, Carty is leaving to spend more time with her daughter.

With only three years under her belt, Colleen Carty retired from her position as Administrative Assistant in the college Admissions Office November 19. "I’m going to spend more time with my daughter," said Carty. Her daughter, 14 year-old Kathryn, is a sophomore at Norfolk Academy. "My husband died last February," said Carty. "So it’s just the two of us now."

For most of her life Carty moved with her husband, a Navy captain, every three years. They lived in many places around the world, from Belgium to San Francisco to Norfolk; they traveled everywhere during those years to places Carty described as "absolutely fabulous." She has been in Norfolk now for four years and, for once in her life, she doesn’t see herself moving anywhere anytime in the near future. "I acquired a calico cat that speaks French from Belgium," said Carty. "And he doesn’t have a green card." Carty looks forward to retiring, though she admits she will miss it. "I like the students a lot they are so friendly, and so is the faculty and staff," said Carty. "But right now I just want to stay home and travel. I would however like to come back and work part-time when they need me.

Carty had become a familiar face and voice for many of the admissions counselors. She had a certain charm and charisma that they loved. "All the admissions counselors called her mom," said admissions counselor Beth Hodges. "She always checked up on us when we were on the road. We are all going to miss our Admissions mom. No one can ever take her place."

On the move

Security and weight room are relocated due to ongoing campus construction

Due to upcoming construction for the new student center, the security office and weight room have been relocated to other areas of campus. Most recently, security has moved above the library. "We’ve moved after about ten years over in the trailer," said Dick Safford, head of campus security. "We have a lot of things to move that other people don’t."

Safford and staff transported communications devices, computer equipment, and emergency alarm equipment across campus, in addition to all of their furniture. "I love it here," said Safford. He believes that this temporary office is more centrally located, and therefore more accessible for students. After completion of the Student Center, Safford and staff will move to the current Student Publications offices in Village I. A security officer will also be stationed in the Student Center at all times. "We’ve made the best up here with what we’ve had," said Safford. "We work closely with the library staff, and I believe we have a very friendly service window."

The weight room also moved from the gym into Pruden Lounge. Coordinated by Associate Athletic Director Joanne Renn, the equipment was moved to Village I. Players and staff from both the men’s lacrosse team and the baseball team, as well as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Dave Macedo, carried the equipment to Pruden. "I think it’s great, it’s almost a nicer facility than what it was," said Men’s Lacrosse Coach Booby Wynne, who was part of the move. "We couldn’t have done it without the help of all of the players."

While the move has made for a lot of extra work, Safford has kept a positive attitude. "We work wherever we have to be and I’ll make do with whatever I have," said Safford. "I have no problems, no complaints."

Take the Today Show Challenge!
President Greer has issued a campus wide challenge. If you are going to be flying to New York any time before the end of the school year, you may have a chance to get President Greer to reimburse you for your plane ticket. All you have to do is make a poster promoting VWC, wear a VWC sweatshirt, and stand outside NBC Studio, ready to be caught on camera. When you return, if you show President Greer a videotape of yourself and your poster as seen on "The Today Show," he will reimburse you half the cost of your ticket. If you are spoken to by one of the Today Show staffers and mention VWC in your conversation, he will reimburse you for the full amount of the ticket. Of course, once again, you need to show him a videotape.
