Letter to the Editor

To Whom It May Concern:

I'm rather disappointed at the Marlin Chronicle for the negative attention given to the cancelled Poetry Slam. Admittedly, there was a need to announce the event's cancellation, but one wonders why only this, rather than a fuller and more accurate account of the situation, appears in the Chronicle.

It's troubling that the Chronicle did not fully cover this "story." From what I understand, no one from the Chronicle even bothered to interview Mr. Crehan, the president of Sigma Tau Delta. It seems only responsible to speak with the parties involved--or should I say it's irresponsible not to? Does an alumni have more relevance to a current "story" on campus than the organizer of the slam?

Your "coverage" of the story is also problematic. According to one of my students, those students who were at Blocker that night took it upon themselves to turn a missed opportunity into a creative action. The students who were there did have a poetry reading. No where in the article does the writer mention this. How come? It seems rather irresponsible only to partially report on the event. Fault, if there was any, should be pointed out, however, what about the spontaneous creativity that made this potentially awkward situation into an example of what VWC students can do on their own? There, I suggest, is the real and much more exciting story.
