In a matter of weeks Village IV will open to the student populace, freeing those who have been trapped in limbo over at the Lake Wright Hotel. As the newest edition to the residences on campus, Village IV will be the most modern and well furnished dorms on campus.
“The plan and the schedule right now is that the town houses will be open for winter session, with a formal opening in the spring” said Carolyn Hughes, the director of Res Life. When asked if everything was on schedule, Hughes merely stated, “Yes.”
Construction of Village IV was spurred on by the large freshman class of 2006, as well as an increased desire to live on campus. The college hopes to improve the communal air of the college, and believes more students on campus will help lead to that goal.
Village IV will be located at the far end of campus, behind the chapel, roughly between Blocker Hall and Village III. It will be composed entirely of townhouses—the dorms of the past are long gone. Each townhouse will contain four private bedrooms, two semi-private bathrooms, with a fully stocked kitchen and laundry area, as well as a living room. All rooms will have access to cable tv, high speed internet, and local telephone access.
In all there will be a total of six buildings formally opening in the spring 2008 semester. All told, they will house about 96 beds,.
The decision to go to all townhouses was made by the school after the success and subsequent popularity of them in Brock Village. However, the new buildings in Village IV will have some design differences. They will feature steeped roofs, as opposed to the flat roofs found in Brock. Covered porches and columns will also help to set the new buildings apart.
Sophomore Tim Maloney stated when asked about moving into Village IV and out of Lake Wright, “I am extremely excited because I am tired of living in the hotel, and living like a commuter. I want to live on campus.”
