So you didnt go? No ones surprised. Saturdays showing of Anything Goes was performed to an audience that consisted of family, friends and very few students. Still, a sold-out show is a sold-out show and that it was on Nov. 8 at 8 p.m.
Anything Goes is set on a luxury liner sailing from New York to England. Traveling aboard are the soon-to-be-married Sir Evelyn Oakleigh and Hope Harcourt, played by Larry Guthrie and Kerri Hollinger. In addition, aboard the ship sails Manhattans own celebrity Reno Sweeny (Mary Stevenson), Moonface Martin (Pat Gainer), and freeloader Billy Crocker (Terry Heinze). Also present are Ms. Sweeneys angels, Moonfaces partner Bonnie and several passengers.
With a cast of 22 there were good performances--and there were good performances, including three that stole the show. Stevenson played the role of Reno Sweeney as no one else could. Her glam and glitz was undeniably believable. In addition her overwhelming singing abilities were evident in several solos.

Ever wonder what it takes for the students of Virginia Wesleyan College to put on the annual semester theater production? For the past four years the Wesleyan theater department has been able to accomplish such a task with the help of Joshua J.B. Brown. Brown who is involved with many groups on campus including Phi Kappa Tau, the Fencing Club and Habitat for Humanity, has had the responsibility of being this semesters stage manager and assistant technical director for the production of the musical Anything Goes.
Holding these two positions means a lot of work for Brown this semester. His daily routine since school started has come to include five hours a day, five days a week working in the theater on the production. In addition to being responsible for issuing daily tasks, prior to the start of the production Brown assisted in construction and painting of the set and props. But now that the production has started, Browns responsibilities have shifted to making sure the actors hit their nightly cues and overseeing that the crew runs the show smoothly. There is other pre-show work, including performing repairs for any damage done the night before.
Im really proud of the cast and crew, said Brown, Everyones worked to their fullest potential this semester. Brown has been a part of the planning process for this semesters production since the design process began at the end of last year and has worked on every other production at Wesleyan since his freshman year. Brown first got involved in theater work when he was asked to help out his drama club in his freshman year in high school and again was recruited to Wesleyans theater department before he was even a student here.

Artist of the Issue (AOI) Bio:
Joshua JB Brown Year: Senior / Age: 21 Hometown: Virginia Beach, Virginia Major: Theater / Art Quote: All the worlds a stage. |
Ive always been involved in arts and carpentry, said Brown, Technical theater was just a natural progression. Brown involved is also a dedicated art major with an emphasis in ceramics. He loves the theater and all the hard work that goes into a production for the final payoff but loves ceramics because of the flexibility of the medium, though his first love will always be carpentry. People can manipulate ceramics, paint and ink, said Brown, but wood is an ancient medium thats extremely versatile and exceptionally beautiful. You can see Browns hard work pay off with the final two performances of Anything Goes this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15, at 8 p.m.
