Honoring Ed Hughes

By Megan Zirkle

Since the death of Ed Hughes, longtime anchorman of WTKR Channel 3 News, friends and colleagues have joined forces to generate a journalism scholarship at VWC in his memory.

Betty Ann Bowser, a correspondent for “The News Hour” on public television; Charles Hartig of the legislative department of the city of Norfolk; and Pamela J. Miller, public information office in the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s office, feel a scholarship should benefit a student journalist.

“Our idea is to honor Ed,” Bowser said.

“The money should go to the student who believes in getting the story and writing the story right.”

Hughes lost his fight with colon cancer June 1. Hughes began his career in local broadcasting in 1967 and gave 36 years to Channel 3 News.

His journalistic contribution made him a model for young reporters trying to make it into the news business.
