Table and a Ticket: Harold's Restaurant

By Gina Haskins

Do you know of any restaurant, formal or informal, that allows you to seat yourself? Visit Harold’s Restaurant on Virginia Beach Boulevard. and you will find yourself at the most relaxed dining spot in the Hampton Roads area.

Harold’s is a small, quaint restaurant that caters to those who desire a time-honored dining experience. It is small enough to host the local baseball team after a winning game and relaxed enough for a family reunion.

Harold’s is not part of a chain and is extremely personal with every customer. What makes Harold’s unique is that it is a treasure, a relic in the sense that it’s the last of its kind. It is a family-owned restaurant that clings to its community and family-centered values.

There is a pool table and a few arcade machines in the back, a sunken bar at the center of the room surrounded by tables and booths and pictures on the walls of Hollywood’s glamour-era movie stars including Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and Sophia Loren.

Harold’s serves Italian cuisine, though it also offers the “Garden Pita” for vegetarians, which comes complete with sauteed mushrooms, onions and green peppers on pita bread, topped with tomatoes, feta cheese and gyro sauce.

I decided to order their celebrated pepperoni pizza.

Harold’s offers a wide selection of pizzas, including plain cheese, salami and Greek pizza served with gyro meat, black olives, sliced tomatoes, feta cheese, garlic, oregano and olive oil.

The desserts are homemade and consist of plain cheesecake, cheesecake with strawberries, carrot cake and Congo Pie, which is a chocolate lover’s delight.

Whether you are visiting Harold’s for the first time or are a regular customer, you are definitely guaranteed a terrific dining experience.
