New Music Preview: A Tribe Called Quest

The Album
The Love Movement

For an album that serves as a group’s finale, The Love Movement seems like an ironic album title.

A Tribe Called Quest’s fifth and final effort was accompanied by an avalanche of delays and drama, but this 15 song concept album manages to remain upbeat and focused on the theme of love.

Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Mohammed and the five-foot assassin Phife never allow this swan song to belly flop in the creative pool. While The Love Movement may not be as definitive as the group’s 1991 masterwork The Low End Theory, it delivers more bouncy, head-bobbing gems that fans have grown to expect.

With some indelible guest spots from the likes of Redman, Busta Rhymes, Mos Def and Noreaga, this final bow sounds like the casual farewell jam it aspires to be.
