Car vandalism in G parking lot causes safety concerns
by Emily Brockelsby

October is national crime prevention month, but you might not believe that if you’re one of the three VWC students who have had their cars broken into in “G” lot--near the soccer/lacrosse stadium--in the last few weeks. Two of the break-ins occurred over homecoming weekend and the third happened a few days prior. In all three cases, a brick was apparently thrown through a window, and articles were removed from the car.

Junior Kate Wehmeyer had parked her car in G lot for the soccer game over homecoming weekend and left it there overnight, assuming it would be safe. Unfortunately, she was wrong. Her stereo, 70 tapes and all of the paperwork from the glove compartment were stolen. Luckily, her insurance will cover all of the damage and replacement costs.

Dick Safford, head of campus security, referred to the recent events as a crime wave. This may seem a bit overstated; however, during all of last year there were only two break-ins. The year before that there were none.

At the present time there is only one lamp pole in G lot. Security is currently negotiating with maintenance for more lighting in that parking lot but no final decision has been made. Every evening there are three security guards patrolling campus, including the staff member working the front gate. On weekends more security staff are available, but never more than five guards.

Safford offered some advice for increased car security while parked on campus.

“If possible never leave your car in G lot after dark,” he said. “Park as close to your dorm or classroom as possible and in a well-lit area. Any specific questions concerning this topic can be directed to the security office.”
