So you’ve conquered the ever present question “What is your major?” and the never ending hordes of people that ask it. You now face what is possibly the second greatest, and most asked, question of life, “So you’re planning to do what with that major?”
And for everyone at Virginia Wesleyan, whether a freshman or a senior, that question was asked one more time. But this time there wasn’t a career counselor smiling back at you from the other end of the table. This time it was comedian and juggler Josh Casey.
“How many of you know what you’re going to do after college?” said Casey, “I kind of decided that I wanted to be a professional juggler. I just didn’t know for sure if that would be a possibility.” When he was in college, he juggled all the time.
“I juggled classes, jobs, and girlfriends…and they were all on fire,” he added. A burst of laughter ran through the audience as everyone realized how true this statement actually was. Casey lit up the Marlin Grille on Tuesday, October 2nd during homecoming week.
Sponsored by WAC Traditions, the show featured comedy, improvisation, and enough juggling to entertain everyone for the hour long performance. To the crowd’s synchronized clapping and music, he juggled over the head and under the leg.
“I’m gonna get this out of the way right from the get go,” said Casey, “I don’t juggle chainsaws or puppies.”
He kept that promise. But he did juggle wiffle ball bats while on a giant pogo stick for his final act. And he made it possible for the audience to witness him juggling an infinite number of balls. “Spread your fingers apart, then put your hand in front of your face,” he explained, “Then shake your hand back and forth.”
Casey also managed to balance his guitar on his foot before balancing it on his head, all with no hands. He got the audience to participate when he tried to get four people to balance spinning balls on their finger at the same time. It took a little while, but they did it. Just goes to show how smart the students are at Wesleyan.
Even if our aspiration is to juggle, like Casey’s was, we can still get something out of college. Casey majored in theater and, along with numerous bookings of his comedy act, has starred in several short movies and appeared on “Boston Legal.” He has also been involved in theatre and variety shows.
“That’s what I got out of my college degree,” said Casey. As he wished everyone a happy homecoming dance, the crowd gave one last cheer for a highly enjoyable night.
