Intramurals get school started with a
shout
by Jason Hechtkopf
Whooo!!!, as Mark Cassarino would say. Yes its that time of the year again, when the men and women of Wesleyan show off their school pride and athletic talent for some friendly, but forceful competition. Yes ladies and gentlemen, its intramural time.
The season kicked off with seven-on -seven soccer. The tournament was grueling, fun. When the last whistle sounded, signaling the end of the tournament, perennial favorite Baked Chicken was again victorious. For those of you who dont know, Baked Chicken is a team made up of former VWC soccer standouts. I wonder who will win next years tourney?
On a more serious note intramurals are a time when students can relax and take a break from the stress of school.
Intramurals are directed towards fun and games, said intramural head Mark Cassarino. The great thing about intramurals is that its not how far you can throw or how fast you can run; its all about team work.
Whooo!!!
Currently there are two sports: coed ultimate frisbee and beach volleyball. Ultimate frisbee is kind of like a big soccer game, but without the ball and the goal posts, and with a frisbee of course. The object is to fling the frisbee from team member to team member until it crosses into the end zone. Sounds like fun, huh?
Starting its second season in the plethora of intramural activities is beach volleyball. This sport was a big hit last season, but is even bigger this season. Twelve teams make up the volleyball league, each striving to be kings of the beach (or at least kings of the sandbox).
Whooo!!!
But for all you participants, if you sign up for a sport, please show up to the event.
We go through a lot of effort to set things up, said Cassarino. Its disappointing to other players and teams when their opponent fails to show up.
On Friday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m., VWC will try something new, something a little adventurous, something even a little daring. Students of VWC, get ready for Football-A-Palooza. What you ask? Football-A-Palooza. Homecoming traditionally is meant for a big football game. For the first time in Wesleyan history we will, be able to watch a football game.
Members of Greek organizations, athletic teams, faculty, and other campus organizations will square off on the grid-iron. It should be a lot of fun, and a nice change to celebrate Homecoming by watching football.
And in closing, there is only one thing left to say: WHOOO!!!
