After the NCAA Tournament basketball game between Virginia Wesleyan College and Lincoln University on Friday, March 10, a disturbance occurred outside the Batten Student Center, and a VWC graduate brandished a handgun.

“It was a horrible ending for a terrific game,” said Dean of Students David Buckingham..

Campus security immediately called the Virginia Beach Police Department for assistance..

“We recovered the firearm and it is now in our possession,” said Lt. John Lamm of the Third Precinct of the VDPD. “The helicopter used an infrared heat source to locate the individual that fled into the woods.”.

The crowd soon dispersed. No one was injured..

In an e-mail sent to the campus community on March 16, Buckingham wrote, “The responsible individual was not apprehended. However, the Virginia Beach Police Department is continuing their investigation into this matter. The police have spoken with several witnesses, and it is my understanding that an arrest will soon be made of that individual who was responsible for this disturbing event.”.

A warrant was issued by the VBPD on March 17. VWC is cooperating in the full investigation..

“It was a very serious matter, obviously,” said Buckingham. “Fortunately, it didn’t cause any harm to any individual. But it was disturbing.”.
