Althea Gibson - Althea Gibson was born on August 25, 1927 in Harlem New York. As a teen Ms. Gibson became a member of the Harlem Cosmopolitan Tennis Club. In 1942 Ms Gibson won the girls singles. Ms. Gibson graduated from Flordia AM in 1953. Although Ms. Gibson had the talent to compete against her white counter parts, she was not given the opportunity until 1956. Ms. Gibson was invited to the French Open and won. Wimbledon, recognizing her talent, invited her in 1957. Ms. Gibson became the first black woman to win the singles and doubles match in 1957 and 1958.


Madame C. J. Walker - Madame CJ Walker, was born on December 23, 1867 in Louisiana. Ms Walker suffered from a scalp condition that caused her to lose a large portion of her hair. During this time Ms. Walker worked as a hair sales agent. Ms. Walker decided to open her own hair and scalp business. Madame Walker began selling Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower. Madame Walker ended up with business throughout the south and southeast. In 1910, Madame Walker opened one of the nations' largest inland manufacturing centers. Before Oprah, there was Madame CJ Walker, one of the first self made female millionaires.



Shirley Chisholm - Shirley Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924 in Brooklyn New York. Ms. Chisholm graduated from Brooklyn College in 1946 with honors and received her M.A. from Columbia University, in 1952. In 1964, Ms. Chsholm served in the New York Assembly untill 1968. Ms. Chisholm was passionate about serving her community, therefore, her next step did not shock many. In 1968 Ms. Chisholm became the first black woman elected to Congress and in 1972 became the first black woman to run for President.
