My Externship Experience

I completed my extern requirement for portfolio at the Norfolk Neighborhood and Leisure Services main office. I was able to observe the Senior Recreation Specialist II, JoAnne Jones. She oversees some of the recreation facilities in Norfolk. It is her job to make sure that each facility is running well and that every fiscal year they complete a budget. During the week I was there the budget was the hot topic.

This is what you see at the main entrance to the office. A wall of plaques awarded to the Norfolk Neighborhood and Leisure Services.
The
first facility that I was able to visit was the Campostella Recreation Center.
It is one of the smaller centers and one of the less equipped centers.
This
playground will be undergoing renovations this year.

Hopefully within 18 months the Campostella playground will look like this.
This is the playground at the Titus Town Recreation and Visual Arts Center. This center is only 2 years old and is one of the nicer facilities in Norfolk.

This is the Fairlawn Recreation Center. It is attached to Fairlawn Elementary School. This facility is very well equipped due to the funding for the elementary school from Norfolk Public Schools.
Staff
from each center are required to continue their training in their field whenever
possible. The supervisors of the facilities such as JoAnne arrange for the
training sessions to occur. This is a training session of rewarding good
behavior for the facilities daycare staff members.
